20 Hurt as Bus Catches Fire at Commonwealth Avenue

20 Hurt as Bus Catches Fire at Commonwealth Avenue -- Transport news got us tonight with an air-conditioned bus catching fire along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City. According to reports, at least 20 people suffered minor injuries during the incident. The bus involved is a unit from "HM Transport" bus company, bearing the plate TVZ-537, plying the route Pacita-Fairview.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported that the said bus caught fire at past 7 in the evening, near the intersection of Philcoa and Maligaya Street toward Fairview. The fire has been put out at 8:01 pm.

I wonder if the said bus unit was carrying any fire prevention kits or extinguisher to be specific. I can guess a sounding none or zero. Lucky if it has but most likely, it is old and dilapidated already. Sudden cases like these are the reasons why a public transport service must ensure passengers safety. It must be made mandatory for any public transport units to carry fire extinguisher to deal with fire and similar accidents.

HM Transport must take heed of this untoward event.

Tidbits (http://wikimapia.org):
HM Transport Inc. is one of the largest bus companies in the Philippines. It offers both provincial and city operations, servicing routes from Metro Manila to Laguna province and vice versa. The bus company was named after Homer Mercado, a bus operator, who was believed to be a grand nephew of Filipino national hero, Jose Rizal.
