Today is MMDA's 37th Founding Anniversary

November 7, 2012 (Wed) is Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's (MMDA) 37th Founding Anniversary. The Urban Walker greets the office for its untiring battle in keeping the metro at shape - organized and working as planned. Though, there will be more years to come with a lot of challenges waiting ahead; MMDA has been doing a lot of works for Mega Manila.
MMDA possesses both regulatory and supervisory authority over local or urban matters affecting the 16 cities and one (1) municipality comprising Metro Manila – Manila, Caloocan, Las Piñas, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Parañaque, Pasay, Pasig, Quezon City, San Juan, Taguig, and Valenzuela, and the municipality of Pateros.
Lately, among the many urban related projects and or programs conducted by the MMDA, the following are some that I was able to write about:
  1. Metro Manila GreenPrint 2030
  2. Motorcycle Lanes
  3. Live Traffic Monitoring System / Traffic Navigator for Metro Manila
  4. Launching of Public Vehicles’ Electronic Tagging (E-Tagging)  System
  5. Deployment of First Batch of E-Scooters in Metro Manila's Congested Areas and Tourist Districts
  6. MMDA Hotlines for Behaved and Corrupt Traffic Aides and;
  7. MMDA vs. Jaywalkers: Use Footbridges and Pedestrian Lanes or Pay P200
Other things being looked into by the MMDA are (http://mb.com.ph/):
  • Transport and traffic management
  • Flood control and dredging of waterways
  • Disaster prevention and response
  • Advocating a smoke-free environment
  • Solid waste disposal and management
  • Sewerage management
  • Urban renewal
  • Zoning and land use planning and shelter provision
  • Health and sanitation
  • Urban protection and pollution control, and;
  • Public safety
Short history of the MMDA
On November 7, 1975, by virtue of Presidential Decree 824, MMDA's forerunner, the Metro Manila Commission or MMC was created. The office was established to address the growing need of the region with a booming population of over 12 million residents back then, for basic services.
Most of Metro Manila residents favored the retention of the MMC, resulting in the creation of a new agency, the MMDA, which took over the functions of the MMC by virtue of Republic Act 7924, signed on July 25, 1994.
The Urban Walker is hereby greeting the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority under the chairmanship of Atty. Francis N. Tolentino on this special day and occasion.
