Quezon City to Implement Regulation on the Use of Plastic Bags

Quezon City to Implement Regulation on the Use of Plastic Bags -- Starting tomorrow, September 1 (Sat), 2012, an ordinance regulating the use of plastic bags will be implemented in Quezon City. This is stipulated in the city ordinances SP-2140 and SP-2130, which aim to "reduce the volume of plastic waste produced by the city."

SP-2140 or the Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance is set to regulate the use of plastic bags, while SP-2130 mandates all business entities that uses plastic bags to encourage their customers to protect the environment by "bringing their own recyclable/reusable bags." This shall be done by displaying conspicuously, a notice  like this one, I snapped at the SM Hypermarket a few days ago.

You may be confused with the poster above but I think there was a minor typo or perhaps mix of ordinance numbers somewhere, but one thing is for sure - there will be a regulation on the use of plastic bags in the city and that, as a consumer, you are encouraged to contribute to the movement on protecting the environment by bringing your own recyclable / reusable bags. Failure to do so shall cost you P2.00 environmental fee for every new plastic, regardless of the size, that you will be getting. The establishments are also legally directed to comply with the ordinance.

So as the poster is saying:
  •  If you bring an old plastic bag, SM will replace it with a new one
  •  If you bring an SM Greenbag, SM will reward you with SMAC points
  •  If you do not bring any bag, each new plastic bag will be charged P2.00 environmental fee effective September 1, 2012
Meanwhile, according to QC Environmental Division, establishments found violating the ordinance shall be fine with the following:
  1. 1st offense: P1,000.00
  2. 2nd offense: P3,000.00
  3. 3rd offense: P5,000.00 or revocation of business permit
Let us hope for the smooth roll of this ordinance in the city, for the protection of mother nature. Look for your old plastic bags and bring them with you when you shop. It maybe an ounce of what we can do to protect the environment but it is still a contribution. We should be part of the movement and initiative, even without the imposition of the above-mentioned ordinances, for our own good and protection. It's just the right thing to do.

  2. Well, I think that the payment for the new plastic bag is way to small for me. I wonder where the fee goes.

  3. Ever Gotesco mall in QC charges eco-bag for 10 pesos, they were saying there will be no more supply of plastics for the grocery.

  4. I retweet this post

  5. In our city, plastic bags are already banned from use. If you go to shopping you should bring a bayong or an eco-bag. LOL
