Love Run Love Life : A Fun Run for Road Safety

Love Run Love Life : A Fun Run for Road Safety. Are you a marathon runner or perhaps a supporter and advocate of Road Safety? There is this one of the chances that you can contribute to the cause by dedicating a few hours of your time to run. This marathon event will be happening at the ONEA Events Place, Antipolo City, on February 12, 2012 at 6:00 AM.

To participate, just register thru SMS or text message using this number: 0922-3342712. I found an image of the event's poster below but the email is just vague so I did not take the chance to guess it. If you can visualize it, please do so.

There are a lot of sponsors reflected on the poster. Notably, the three (3) major Television networks in the Philippines are on the list. Also, I learned from a Facebook post that celebrity / composer Chuckie Dreyfus will be running too. If you are particular at that :)

This is a noble and timely event. It is dedicated to one of the most pressing transportation issues and problems in the Philippines. Road safety issue cannot be taken lightly, specially now that we learned from available WHO (World Health Organization) data and statistics that due to road accidents;
  • Roughly, there are 1.3M people die, while 50M are injured or permanently disabled each year
  • Road crashes emerged as the leading cause of death
  • The victims are mostly children and young people aged between 10-24
  • The burden is comparable to malaria and TB, which costs 1-3% of the world’s GDP
In particular, Philippines has (WHO data):
  • 1,185 people, reported killed in road crashes in the year 2006
  • Road crashes costs $1.9 billion / year or 2.6% of the country’s GDP
  • Young people are at risk the most
  • 1 in 5 people are killed and 1 in 4 people are seriously injured, of under 15 y.o.
  • Pedestrians account around almost half of all deaths and injuries
  • Motorcyclists deaths grew by 40% per annum until 2003
The above mentioned figures are actually in significant connection with the United Nation's declaration of the year 2011 - 2020 as the "Decade of Action for Road Safety". This program made it to a Presidential proclamation in the Philippines (Proclamation No. 159).

Decade of Action for Road Safety was developed with the support of the World Health Organization to enjoin all concerned country agencies, organizations, groups and also road users to work together in strengthening related programs for road safety. Road Safety became a major concern during the 8th Annual Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) Asia Road Safety Seminar held in November 3-5, 2010 in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
