New MTRCB Chief is Lawyer Eugenio Villareal

New MTRCB Chief is Lawyer Eugenio Villareal -- News have it that the new Movies and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) head is Lawyer Eugenio ‘Toto’ Villareal. He replaced Grace Poe-Llamanzares who is now running for senator in the 2013 elections.

Grace said, Atty. Villareal is the man perfect for the job. He is a fan of Filipino movies, including masa-based and indie movies. Being a successful lawyer, Atty. Villareal apprecites Filipino culture, in fact he even wrote a thesis on the Escalera Brothers of Iskul Bukol.

The MTRCB utilizes the following ratings system for movies (http://en.wikipilipinas.org):
  • G or GP - General patronage
  • PG-7 - Parental guidance for children under 7 (not currently used)
  • PG-13 - Parental guidance for children under 13
  • R (deprecated) - Strictly for persons over 18 (until early 2000s when the rating was split into two brackets)
  • R-13 - Strictly for persons over 13
  • R-18 - Strictly for persons over 18
  • X - Not for public viewing
While for television programs, the ratings are based on the ff:
  • G rating for general patronage
  • PG for parental guidance
  • X - Not for public viewing
Let's hope for an improved movie genre in the Philippines, specially in the realm of promoting local talents and expertise in the movie productions. And speaking of movies, I can't wait for Dec. 8 (Sat) to come for the  SM Cinema free movie day. Too bad if you did not make it till the sign up deadline.
